His daughter Peach Caparas confirmed his death in a heartfelt Facebook post.

A Storyteller Who Enriched Filipino Culture

In her touching tribute, Peach described her father as “a storyteller who created life stories, fighting through sleepless nights, and working late”. 

Through his brilliant artistry, Caparas created classic comic book characters that became an integral part of Filipino culture.

Some of his most famous creations include Panday, Pieta, Elias Paniki, Bakekang, and Totoy Bato. “In the world of comics, he was the King,” Peach wrote. “He made a mark in local culture that enriched our culture.”

From Comic Strips to the Big Screen

Caparas’ influence extended beyond the pages of comic books. Many of his comic strips were adapted into popular television series and films. ABS-CBN released TV adaptations of Panday in 2005, Pieta in 2008, Bakekang in 2006, and Gagambino in 2008, introducing Caparas’ characters to a new generation.

As a filmmaker, Caparas directed numerous notable works such as Hiwaga ng Panday, Ang Babaing Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, Tirad Pass: The Last Stand of Gen. Gregorio del Pilar, and the controversial 1993 film The Vizconde Massacre. 

He was known for his true-to-life massacre films like Kuratong Baleleng and The Cory Quirino Kidnap: NBI Files.

Controversial National Artist Proclamation

In 2009, Caparas was proclaimed a National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts and Film by then President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. 

However, this honor was met with controversy when it was revealed that Caparas was not on the original shortlist of nominees submitted by the selection committee.
