In the world of elite sports, athletes often take center stage, their triumphs celebrated and their faces plastered across headlines. However, behind every successful athlete lies a dedicated team of professionals working tirelessly to optimize their performance.

One such unsung hero is Lyn Hazel Calawod, the brilliant mind behind the success of Filipino gymnastics sensation Carlos Yulo.

From Commercial Modeling to Sports Therapy

Before delving into Hazel’s pivotal role in Yulo’s journey, let’s take a closer look at her background. Born on March 1, 1989, in South Cotabato, Philippines, Hazel displayed academic excellence from a young age.

She graduated as salutatorian from Notre Dame-Sienna School of Marbel in 2005 and went on to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy at the University of the Philippines Manila, where she graduated in 2010.

Interestingly, Hazel’s career began in a different field altogether. She started as a commercial model, representing major brands such as Chippy, Sprite, Coca-Cola, Block & White, Nescafe, and Bon Chon. However, her true passion lay in the realm of occupational therapy and sports performance.

The NeuroBalance Therapy Founder

Hazel’s expertise in neurorehabilitation and sports performance led her to establish NeuroBalance Therapy, a holistic rehabilitation center catering to a diverse clientele, including children with disabilities, elderly individuals, and elite athletes. Her unique approach integrates multiple research-based methodologies to ensure optimal health and performance for her clients.

As the founder and general manager of NeuroBalance Therapy, Hazel leads a team of rehabilitation specialists dedicated to providing top-notch care. Her clinical expertise spans neurorehabilitation, occupational therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), elite athletic performance optimization, and the aging brain.

Elite Sports Performance Coach

Hazel’s reputation as an elite sports performance coach has attracted an impressive roster of clients, from UFC fighters and Under Armour athletes to world champions in Esports. In 2021, she served as the Sports Mind Coach for Bren Esports’ Valorant Team, guiding them to victory as Southeast Asian Champions and securing their spot at Valorant Masters Berlin.

Her innovative approach to neurorehabilitation has garnered international recognition. In 2021, Hazel won first place in BR41N.IO’s global competition for artificial intelligence in neurorehabilitation data analysis. She was also a finalist in the Australian Embassy in the Philippines’ 2018 Australia Alumni Excellence Awards, further cementing her status as a leader in her field.

The Carlos Yulo Connection

Hazel’s most notable contribution to Philippine sports lies in her work with Carlos Yulo, the country’s gymnastics prodigy. Since 2021, she has been an integral part of the Philippines’ National Team for Men’s Artistic Gymnastics, playing a crucial role in supporting the team during the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam and working closely with Yulo to optimize his performance.

As Yulo’s sports occupational therapist, Hazel manages his biomechanics, collecting scientific data to enhance his performance and support him through intense training and high-stakes competitions. Her work encompasses everything from conditioning and therapy to recovery and beyond.

In an interview with One Sports a month before the Paris Olympics 2024, Hazel shared insights into Yulo’s physical and mental preparation:

Yung body niya, yung physical condition niya, as per his performance in different apparatus po, is much stronger. Kung ano yung nagawa namin on week one, which was quite heavy, nakatulong na sa pag make sure na yung muscles niya are able to get the right contractions at this certain period of time.

She emphasized the importance of mental resilience in elite sports:

Despite the physical aspect of being an athlete, a big battle within them really is, how are they going to bring that momentum mentally. So, now that you’re getting a lot of technical information for the game plan, how is he managing it from a Carlos Yulo perspective. This week yun naman po yung tinatrabaho namin sa kanya.

Hazel’s dedication and expertise paid off in spectacular fashion at the Paris Olympics 2024, where Yulo made history by winning two gold medals in the floor exercise and vault competitions. His triumph sent shockwaves through the Philippines, with thousands taking to the streets of Manila to celebrate their hero.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. wasted no time in recognizing Yulo’s achievement, awarding him a presidential citation and a sum of $350,000, in addition to the 10 million pesos granted by law to Olympic gold medalists. Yulo was also showered with gifts, ranging from a luxurious condo to a lifetime supply of chicken barbecue and Japanese noodles.

A Beacon of Inspiration

Hazel’s journey from the dusty streets of South Cotabato to becoming a driving force behind Olympic glory is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and dedication. Her multifaceted talents, spanning occupational therapy, sports performance, and even the arts, paint a picture of a well-rounded individual constantly seeking growth and excellence.

As an active member of Australia Global Alumni, Hazel remains connected to a global network of professionals, contributing to her field and beyond. Her story serves as a beacon of inspiration, not just for aspiring occupational therapists and sports coaches, but for anyone with a dream and the determination to pursue it.

In the end, while Carlos Yulo’s name may be etched in the annals of Olympic history, it is the tireless work of individuals like Lyn Hazel Calawod that makes such triumphs possible. As the Philippines continues to celebrate its golden moment, let us also shine a light on the unsung heroes who toil behind the scenes, crafting success one step at a time.

The Philippines is off to a strong start at the 2024 Paris Olympics, with its 22 athletes competing across 9 sports and vying for medals in the world’s biggest sporting stage. As of July 30, 2024, the country has already seen some impressive performances from its Olympians.

Boxing

Filipino boxers have delivered the most promising results so far. Aira Villegas dominated her round-of-32 bout in the women’s 50kg class against Morocco’s Yasmine Mouttaki, advancing to the round of 16 and moving two wins away from securing a medal.

Meanwhile, silver medalist Nesthy Petecio is set to begin her campaign in the women’s 57kg division against India’s Jaismine Lamboria. Petecio aims to go one step further this time and claim the gold that eluded her in Tokyo.

Gymnastics

On the gymnastics front, Carlos Yulo put on a near-flawless performance in the men’s floor exercise qualification, scoring an impressive 14.766 to provisionally take second place. The star gymnast, who narrowly missed out on a medal in this event in Tokyo, looks poised to contend for the top prize in Paris.

Yulo also made the finals of the individual all-around and vault events, boosting his chances of taking home multiple medals.

In the women’s competition, the Fil-Am trio of Aleah FinneganEmma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar began their quest for medals in the all-around qualification. The rising talents are hoping to ride on Yulo’s success and help establish the Philippines as a gymnastics powerhouse.

Fencing

Fencer Samantha Catantan fought bravely against world no. 2 Arianna Errigo of Italy in the table of 32 of the women’s individual foil. Despite battling with a knee injury, the 266th-ranked Catantan gave the top seed all she could handle before bowing out, 15-12.

While her Paris journey ended early, Catantan’s gallant stand against an elite fencer showed that Philippine fencing is on the rise and capable of competing with the world’s best.

Other Sports

In rowingJoanie Delgaco‘s bid for a quarterfinal berth in the women’s single sculls came up short after she placed fourth in her heat. The Filipina rower will have to go through the repechage round to keep her medal hopes alive.

Over in swimming, Fil-Canadian Kayla Sanchez, a two-time Olympic medalist for Canada, is set to make her Philippine debut in the women’s 100m freestyle heats. Sanchez’s addition to the team is a major boost and raises the country’s profile in the pool.

Judoka Kiyomi Watanabe is also aiming for a better showing in her second straight Olympics after an early exit in Tokyo. She opens her women’s -63kg campaign against China’s Tang Jing.

Looking Ahead

As the Paris Olympics enter its first full week of competition, sports fans back home are eager to see the Philippine flag raised in the medal ceremonies.

With a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars, the Philippines is fielding one of its strongest ever contingents in the Summer Games. The country’s historic performance in Tokyo – which saw weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz win the first ever Olympic gold – has raised expectations and belief that Filipino athletes can compete with and beat the world’s best.

All eyes will be on Yulo, Petecio, Diaz, and the rest of the team as they try to surpass the country’s best ever Olympic haul of 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze. But regardless of the final medal tally, the fighting spirit and sportsmanship displayed by these athletes have already made the Philippines proud.

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao returned to the ring on Sunday, July 28, 2024 for an exhibition match against Japanese kickboxer Rukiya Anpo at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan. In front of a packed crowd of 48,000 fans, the two fighters went toe-to-toe for three rounds, with the bout ultimately ending in a draw.

The 45-year-old Pacquiao, who last fought professionally in August 2021, was eager to put on a show for the Japanese audience. However, he faced a formidable challenge in the 28-year-old Anpo, a champion kickboxer who enjoyed significant height and reach advantages over the Filipino legend.

A Clash of Styles

Despite the exhibition nature of the fight, both men came out firing from the opening bell. Anpo, who was making his boxing debut, surprised many with his aggressive approach and ability to land clean shots on Pacquiao.

The Japanese fighter used his jab effectively, keeping Pacquiao at range and making it difficult for him to unleash his trademark combinations. Anpo also showed impressive power, rocking Pacquiao with an overhand right in the third round and forcing the Filipino to dig deep into his arsenal.

Pacquiao, for his part, displayed flashes of the brilliance that made him an eight-division world champion. He tried to bore in on Anpo, landing body shots and attempting to set up his vaunted left hand. However, Anpo’s size and movement made it challenging for Pacquiao to sustain his offense.

No Clear Victor

With no official scoring in place for the exhibition, the fight was declared a draw after the final bell. Both men had their moments throughout the three rounds, but neither was able to gain a decisive advantage.

After the fight, Pacquiao complimented Anpo’s performance. “He’s strong and fights well even though he lacks experience. He’s also way bigger than me,” said Pacquiao, who weighed in at 154 pounds compared to Anpo’s fight night weight of over 180 pounds.

Anpo, elated by his showing against a boxing legend, revealed that he had been training in boxing for the past few years. “I really want to finish him off but he’s tough,” said Anpo. “His punches weren’t really heavy. I’m having fun, I feel like I’m on a roll.”

Looking Ahead

For Pacquiao, the exhibition served as a “good tune-up” as he considers a potential return to competitive boxing later this year. “I hope this is not the last,” Pacquiao said after the fight, hinting at his desire to continue fighting.

However, the Filipino icon acknowledged that he has work to do if he is to resume his career at the highest level. Pacquiao admitted to being only “60 percent” for the bout against Anpo and realized that he needs to sharpen his skills if he is to compete against top welterweights.

The exhibition also raised questions about Pacquiao’s future in the sport. While his warrior spirit remains intact, the effects of age were evident in his performance against Anpo. Some observers, such as The Ring Magazine’s Jake Donovan, questioned how much Pacquiao had trained for the fight and expressed reservations about his ability to compete against elite opposition at this stage of his career.

A Spectacle for the Fans

Despite the inconclusive result, the Pacquiao-Anpo exhibition provided an entertaining spectacle for boxing fans. The sight of a living legend sharing the ring with a rising star from a different combat sport generated significant interest and excitement.

The event also showcased the enduring popularity of Pacquiao, who remains one of the biggest draws in boxing even in the twilight of his career. The packed arena and global media attention surrounding the fight were testaments to the Filipino icon’s star power and the affection he commands from fans around the world.

The Future of Exhibitions

The Pacquiao-Anpo bout is part of a growing trend of high-profile exhibition matches featuring retired or aging boxing stars. In recent years, fighters such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Mike Tyson, and Roy Jones Jr. have participated in these events, which offer a nostalgic appeal and the opportunity to see legends in action once again.

While some purists may dismiss exhibitions as mere spectacles, they serve an important role in keeping boxing in the public eye and attracting casual fans to the sport. They also provide aging fighters with a way to stay active and earn paydays without the same risks associated with competitive bouts.

As long as there is demand from fans and willing participants, exhibitions are likely to remain a fixture of the boxing landscape. However, it is crucial that these events are properly regulated and that the health and safety of the fighters remain paramount.

Conclusion

The exhibition match between Manny Pacquiao and Rukiya Anpo may not have produced a clear winner, but it delivered an entertaining show for fans and provided a glimpse into the current state of Pacquiao’s skills.

While the Filipino legend showed flashes of his brilliant best, he also displayed the inevitable signs of age and ring rust. His performance against Anpo raised questions about his ability to compete at the highest level of the sport and will undoubtedly factor into his decision-making regarding his future in boxing.

Regardless of what lies ahead, Pacquiao’s legacy as one of the greatest fighters of his generation is secure. His accomplishments in the ring and his impact on the sport will endure long after he hangs up his gloves for good.

As for Anpo, the exhibition offered a unique opportunity to test his skills against a boxing legend and raise his profile on the global stage. While he may not have secured a victory, he earned respect for his performance and showed that he has the potential to make an impact in the boxing world if he chooses to pursue that path.

In the end, the Pacquiao-Anpo exhibition was a reminder of the enduring appeal of boxing and the power of its biggest stars to captivate audiences around the world. It may not have been a fight for the ages, but it provided a memorable moment for fans and a fitting chapter in the storied career of one of boxing’s true icons.

The spirit of the Filipino athletes shone through despite the rain at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. In a historic first, the parade of nations took place on boats sailing down the River Seine. The Philippine delegation, comprised of 22 athletes and sports officials, shared a boat with Poland and Puerto Rico as they waved to cheering crowds lining the riverbanks.

Olympic silver medalists and boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam proudly carried the Philippine flag at the head of the delegation. Petecio won silver in the women’s featherweight division at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, while Paalam clinched silver in the men’s flyweight event.

Their presence leading the team highlights the Philippines’ strength in boxing and the high hopes pinned on the boxing contingent to deliver medals in Paris.

The Philippine delegation was the 148th to be introduced, at around 3:29 am on Saturday, July 27 Manila time. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and other officials cheered them on from a special section on the riverbank, patiently waiting through the night as the delegations were introduced in French alphabetical order.

Only the delegations of Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, and the next two Olympic hosts – the United States in 2028 and Australia in 2032 – along with the current host France, entered out of alphabetical order. They were the last to sail in, after the Philippines and the other nations had already passed by.

22 Filipino Athletes Across 8 Sports

The Philippines is fielding a lean but high-quality team of 22 athletes across 8 different sports. While the opening ceremony delegation was just 10 athletes and 5 officials, the full Team Philippines contingent is as follows:

Athletics (Track & Field)

  • EJ Obiena (Pole Vault)
  • John Cabang Tolentino (110m Hurdles)
  • Lauren Hoffman (400m Hurdles)

Gymnastics

  • Carlos Yulo
  • Aleah Finnegan
  • Levi Ruivivar
  • Emma Malabuyo

Boxing

  • Eumir Marcial (Men’s Middleweight)
  • Nesthy Petecio (Women’s Featherweight)
  • Aira Villegas (Women’s Flyweight)
  • Carlo Paalam (Men’s Flyweight)
  • Hergie Bacyadan (Women’s Featherweight)

Rowing

  • Joanie Delgaco

Swimming

  • Jasmine Alkhaldi
  • Luke Gebbie
  • Miranda Renner
  • Xiandi Chua

Taekwondo

  • Kurt Barbosa
  • Pauline Lopez

Shooting

  • Jayson Valdez
  • Marcelo Gutierrez

Weightlifting

  • Vanessa Sarno
  • Elreen Ando

This is the Philippines’ largest ever contingent for the Olympics, surpassing the previous record of 20 athletes at the Tokyo 2020 Games. It reflects the country’s growing stature in international sports.

High Hopes for Gymnastics, Boxing, Pole Vault

Expectations are especially high for the gymnastics team led by Carlos Yulo, a two-time world champion in the floor exercise and vault events. Yulo is joined by rising star Aleah Finnegan who qualified via her all-around performance at the 2023 World Championships, as well as Levi Ruivivar and Emma Malabuyo who earned their spots through strong showings in World Cup events.

The boxing team is also a source of great pride, with a mix of Olympic veterans like Marcial, Petecio and Paalam, along with young talents Villegas and Bacyadan who qualified via the Olympic boxing qualifiers. The Philippines has won 5 of its 14 total Olympic medals in boxing and is traditionally an Olympic powerhouse in the sport.

In athletics, EJ Obiena leads the charge as the world #2 in pole vault. He was the first Filipino to qualify for Paris when he cleared 5.82 meters at a Diamond League meet, well above the Olympic standard. Hurdlers John Cabang Tolentino and Lauren Hoffman, both national record holders, will also aim to make a splash on the Olympic stage.

100 Years of Filipino Olympic History

2024 is a milestone year as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Philippines’ first Olympic participation. In 1924, sprinter David Nepomuceno was the country’s lone representative at the Paris Games. He competed in the 100m and 200m dash events.

Since then, the Philippines has been represented at every edition of the Summer Olympics. The country won its first medals – bronze in swimming and boxing – at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. It took until 1964 in Tokyo for the Philippines to win its first silver medal, courtesy of boxer Anthony Villanueva.

The Philippines finally struck Olympic gold in 2021 when weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz triumphed in the women’s 55kg category in Tokyo, ending the country’s long wait for the top of the podium. Diaz is sitting out the Paris Olympics to focus on her family, but she has inspired a new generation of Filipino athletes.

Over the past century, the Philippines has steadily grown its Olympic medal haul to 1 gold, 5 silver, and 8 bronze across boxing, swimming, weightlifting, and track & field. The 4 medals won in Tokyo in 2021 – 1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze – was the country’s best ever Olympic performance.

Marching Towards Olympic Glory

As the Philippine delegation marched along the River Seine, waving to the crowds in the Parisian drizzle, there was a palpable sense of excitement and determination. The athletes know they carry the hopes of 110 million Filipinos on their shoulders.

The Philippines is still in search of its first Olympic gold medals in gymnastics, boxing, and pole vault – three of its strongest events in Paris. EJ Obiena, Carlos Yulo, Nesthy Petecio and the rest of the team are all laser-focused on achieving that breakthrough.

Even those not favored for gold are eager to prove they belong among the world’s best. Swimmers like Luke Gebbie and Jasmine Alkhaldi have an opportunity to set new national records. Young boxers Villegas and Bacyadan can gain invaluable experience for future Olympic cycles.

Whatever the final medal tally, these 22 athletes have already done their country proud by qualifying for the pinnacle of sports competition. The Paris Olympics will be a showcase of Filipino athletic excellence, grit, and fighting spirit.

When the Olympic cauldron is lit and the Games officially begin, the Philippines will be ready to make history. With a delegation 100 years in the making, the stage is set for the country’s finest athletes to march towards Olympic glory. The next chapter of Philippine Olympic history is waiting to be written.

The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France will be a historic milestone for the Philippines as the nation celebrates 100 years since its Olympic debut in the very same city.

From July 26 to August 11, 2024, a contingent of 22 Filipino athletes will proudly represent the country as they compete in 9 different sports on the world’s grandest sporting stage.

Largest PH Delegation Since Barcelona ’92

The Philippines is sending its largest Olympic delegation since Barcelona in 1992, with 22 athletes set to compete in Paris. This is a significant increase from the 19 athletes the country sent to the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) is optimistic that this group has the potential to match or even surpass the historic 4-medal haul from Tokyo.

“We have a strong team with several serious medal contenders,” said POC President Abraham Tolentino. “Our goal is to build on the breakthrough success we had in Tokyo and continue to show the world the tremendous Filipino talent and fighting spirit.”

Paalam, Petecio to Carry the Flag

Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio, who both won silver medals in boxing at the Tokyo Olympics, have been given the honor of serving as the Philippines’ flag bearers during the opening ceremony on July 26. They will lead the Philippine delegation as they proudly march into Stade de France wearing barongs designed by Francis Libiran.

Paalam, who competes in the men’s featherweight (57kg) division, and Petecio, who fights in the women’s featherweight (57kg) class, are both aiming to turn their silver medals from Tokyo into gold in Paris. They headline a strong 5-member boxing team that is expected to be a major source of medals for the Philippines.

Obiena, Yulo Lead Medal Hopefuls

Aside from the boxers, the Philippines has several other athletes with serious podium potential in Paris. Foremost among them is pole vaulter EJ Obiena, who is currently ranked #3 in the world. The 27-year-old has been on a tear, consistently clearing 5.90 meters and above in competitions.

He won bronze at the 2022 World Championships and gold at the 2022 Diamond League final. If Obiena can replicate those performances in Paris, a first-ever Olympic medal in athletics for the Philippines is within reach.

Another strong medal contender is gymnast Carlos Yulo, who narrowly missed the podium in Tokyo, finishing 4th in the men’s vault final. Since then, the pocket-sized dynamo has won world championship medals on floor exercise and parallel bars.

Yulo has also dominated the Southeast Asian Games and Asian Championships. His quest for redemption and the Philippines’ first ever Olympic gymnastics medal will be a major storyline in Paris.

Filipina Power in Gymnastics and Weightlifting

Yulo isn’t the only Filipino gymnast to watch in Paris. Thanks to the rise of young Fil-Am talents, the Philippines will be fielding a full women’s artistic gymnastics team for the first time ever. The trio of Aleah FinneganEmma Malabuyo, and Levi Jung-Ruivivar have the potential to make noise in the team and individual events.

Finnegan, whose sister Ava represented the USA, is the 2021 Southeast Asian Games all-around champion. Malabuyo is a former U.S. junior national team member who won bronze in the all-around at the 2022 Asian Championships. Jung-Ruivivar earned an individual Olympic berth with her silver medal on uneven bars at the 2024 Doha World Cup. Together, they give the Philippines a formidable women’s gymnastics squad.

Filipino women will also be forces to reckon with in weightlifting, even with Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz sitting out Paris 2024. Elreen Ando and Vanessa Sarno are both podium contenders.

Ando, who placed 7th in Tokyo, is a two-time SEA Games champion and 2022 Asian Championships silver medalist. Sarno burst onto the scene by winning 3 golds at the 2022 Asian Championships as an 18-year-old. John Ceniza rounds out the weightlifting team on the men’s side.

Young Talents Make Olympic Debuts

Several rising young Filipino athletes will be making their Olympic debuts in Paris. Swimmers Kayla Sanchez and Jarod Hatch, both 21, booked their tickets to Paris with gold medal performances at the 2023 SEA Games. Sanchez will compete in the women’s 100m freestyle while Hatch will swim the men’s 100m butterfly.

In athletics, 20-year-old hurdler Lauren Hoffman will represent the Philippines in the women’s 400m hurdles. The Fil-Am broke the Philippine record en route to qualifying for her first Olympics. On the men’s side, John Cabang Tolentino will run the 110m hurdles after also setting a new national mark.

Fencer Samantha Catantan, the first Filipino fencer to qualify for the Olympics since 1992, will compete in women’s foil. The 21-year-old Penn State standout won gold at the 2023 SEA Games. Judoka Kiyomi Watanabe, a four-time SEA Games champion, will try to make a splash in her Olympic debut in the women’s 63kg division.

Golf Aces Pagdanganan and Ardina Return

Golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardina will make their second straight Olympic appearance for the Philippines. Pagdanganan tied for 43rd as the top Filipino finisher in the women’s golf competition in Tokyo. Ardina placed 57th. Both are aiming for better results this time around at Le Golf National course outside Paris.

Rower Delgaco Carries on Nievarez’s Legacy

Joanie Delgaco will be the lone Filipino rower in Paris, competing in women’s single sculls. The 23-year-old secured her Olympic berth with a gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games, building on the trail blazed by Cris Nievarez in Tokyo 2020 where he was the first Filipino rower to qualify for the Olympics in 20 years. Delgaco is hoping to continue the Philippines’ resurgence in the sport.

PH Broadcasters Gear Up for Comprehensive Coverage

Led by TV5 and One Sports, the MVP Group of companies is the official Philippine media and broadcast partner for Paris 2024. The conglomerate, chaired by business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, has promised “comprehensive coverage across multiple platforms” to bring the Olympics to Filipinos worldwide.

Cignal TV will air the Games on its free and pay TV channels as well as its over-the-top (OTT) service Cignal PlaySmart Communications and PLDT will offer live streaming via their websites and mobile apps.

It will be an unprecedented level of Olympic coverage in the Philippines.“We want to give Filipinos the best possible viewing experience of the Olympics across all platforms – on TV, online, and mobile,” said Pangilinan. “We know how much the Olympics mean to Filipinos, and we want to bring the excitement and inspiration straight to their homes and devices.”

All Eyes on Paris as PH Aims to Make History

As the Philippine delegation prepares for Paris 2024, anticipation is building back home for what could be another glorious Olympic campaign. The team’s success in Tokyo 2020, including the country’s breakthrough first gold medal courtesy of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, has raised expectations and dreams of more Olympic glory.

The Philippines’ top sports officials are confident that the Paris 2024 team has what it takes to surpass the 4-medal haul from Tokyo. “We have a good mix of veterans and young talents, all of whom are capable of winning medals,” said Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Noli Eala. “We are investing in their training and preparation to put them in the best position to succeed.”

The athletes themselves are brimming with confidence and determination. For pole vaulter EJ Obiena, the goal is clear: “I’m going for gold in Paris. I know I have what it takes to win the Philippines’ first Olympic medal in athletics. I’ve been putting in the work and I’m ready to show the world what I can do.”

Gymnast Carlos Yulo, who agonizingly missed a medal by one spot in Tokyo, is driven by redemption. “Tokyo was a learning experience for me. Now I’m more mature, more experienced, and more determined than ever. I won’t be satisfied with anything less than a medal in Paris.”

As the Olympics draw nearer, the excitement and anticipation continue to build. The Philippine delegation will carry the hopes and dreams of 110 million Filipinos as they march in the Parade of Nations at Stade de France on July 26.

A hundred years since a group of intrepid Filipino athletes first competed in the Paris Olympics, a new generation of heroes are ready to make their mark. With pride, passion, and the puso (heart) that defines the Filipino fighting spirit, they will lay it all on the line for flag and country.

Mabuhay ang atletang Pilipino! (Long live Filipino athletes!) All eyes will be on Paris as the Philippines aims to make history once again.

The Social Security System (SSS) offers a Calamity Loan Assistance Program to help its members who have been affected by recent disasters like Super Typhoon Carina. If you are an SSS member residing in a declared calamity area, you may be eligible to apply for this loan to help you recover financially.

Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to apply for the SSS Calamity Loan in the Philippines.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the SSS Calamity Loan, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Have at least 36 monthly SSS contributions, with 6 posted within the last 12 months before filing the loan application
  • Be a resident of an area declared under a state of calamity
  • Be below 65 years old at the time of application
  • Have no final benefit claim like permanent total disability or retirement
  • Have no outstanding past due short-term member loans or restructured loans

The loan amount you can borrow is equivalent to your one monthly salary credit (MSC) or up to a maximum of ₱20,000. The annual interest rate is 10% and the loan can be paid in 24 equal monthly installments over 2 years.

Online Application via My.SSS Portal

The most convenient way to apply for the SSS Calamity Loan is online through the My.SSS web portal. Here are the steps:

  1. Log in to your My.SSS account. If you don’t have one yet, register at the SSS Online Members page.
  2. Once logged in, click on E-Services then Loans. Select Apply for Calamity Loan.
  3. Before you can proceed, you need to enroll your PESONet participating bank account under the Disbursement Account Enrollment Module (DAEM). This is where the loan proceeds will be credited once approved.
  4. Under the Enrollment tab in DAEM, enter your bank details and upload supporting documents like proof of account, valid ID, and a selfie. Account approval takes 1-2 weeks. Once active, it will be marked green under Disbursement Accounts.
  5. With your bank account enrolled, go back to E-Services > Loans > Apply for Calamity Loan. Select your address and provide the required information. Read and agree to the terms then click Submit.
  6. You will see a summary of your calamity loan application. Review it carefully then click Submit. Wait for the notification on your application status in your My.SSS inbox.

The online application is paperless and more efficient. However, make sure all your details are accurate and complete to avoid delays or rejection. Most online applications are processed within 10 working days.

Manual Application at SSS Branch

If you prefer to apply in person or don’t have online access, you can also submit a manual application at an SSS branch. Here’s how:

  1. Download and print the SSS Calamity Loan Assistance Application Form. You can also get the form at any SSS branch.
  2. Fill out the form completely and accurately. Refer to the instructions and reminders at the back of the form. Don’t forget to sign it.
  3. Prepare a photocopy of your two valid IDs and your SSS digitized ID or UMID card.
  4. Submit your accomplished application form and requirements to the nearest SSS branch. Get the receiving copy as proof of filing.
  5. If your application is in order, the loan will be processed in 10 working days. If approved, the loan proceeds will be released through check or credited to your registered bank account or SSS UMID card.

Note that if you apply manually, you would need to claim the check personally at the branch if that is your preferred mode of disbursement. For faster processing, it’s best to enroll your bank account in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

To help you further, here are answers to some common questions about the SSS Calamity Loan:

When can I apply for the calamity loan?

You can only apply once the SSS officially opens the Calamity Loan Assistance Program for your area. This is usually a few days after it has been declared under a state of calamity. The SSS announces the program details, qualified areas, and deadline for application.

For example, the SSS recently opened the calamity loan for members affected by the unrest of Mayon Volcano in Albay until September 21, 2023. Those affected by Super Typhoon Carina should wait for the official announcement from SSS.

How much can I borrow from the calamity loan?

The loanable amount is equal to your average MSC in the last 12 months, rounded up to the nearest ₱1,000, or the amount you applied for, whichever is lower. The maximum amount is ₱20,000 for all members.

How long does it take to process the SSS calamity loan?

Whether you apply online or in person, the standard processing time is 10 working days from the date of filing. This is the time it takes for the SSS to verify your eligibility, approve the loan, and release the funds. Some branches may have shorter or longer processing depending on the volume of applications.

What is the difference between the calamity loan and salary loan?

The main difference is the purpose and eligibility. The calamity loan is only offered to members affected by disasters or calamities, while the salary loan is available to all qualified members anytime for their short-term financial needs.

The salary loan also has two variants – the one-month and two-month loan. The one-month salary loan amount is the same as the calamity loan. The two-month salary loan is double the average MSC for the last 12 months. Both loans have a 10% annual interest rate and 24-month payment term.

What happens if I default on the SSS calamity loan payment?

If you miss paying your monthly amortization, a 1% penalty will be charged on top of the outstanding balance. Your loan will also become past due if unpaid for 3 months, which will disqualify you from renewing your salary loan and other benefits. If left unpaid, the SSS may deduct your outstanding loan balance from your future claims.

To avoid these inconveniences, make sure to pay your calamity loan promptly. You can pay via online banking, Bayad Center, SM Bills Payment, or at any SSS branch. If you really can’t pay due to financial difficulties, you can request for a loan restructuring, subject to SSS approval.

Final Thoughts

The SSS Calamity Loan is a great help for members who are struggling financially due to natural disasters. If you are qualified, take advantage of this loan assistance to aid in your recovery. Whether you choose to apply online or in person, make sure you prepare the complete requirements and submit your application before the deadline.

Most importantly, only borrow what you need and make sure you can repay the loan to avoid problems in the future. If used wisely, the SSS Calamity Loan can help you get back on your feet faster after a calamity.

In a surprising turn of events during his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 22, 2024, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced a complete ban on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country.

The President’s directive came as a shock to many, as he declared,

“Effective today, all POGOs are banned. I hereby instruct Pagcor to wind down and cease the operations of POGOs by the end of the year.”

The decision to ban POGOs comes amidst growing concerns over the industry’s involvement in various criminal activities, such as financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, torture, and even murder.

President Marcos emphasized the need to put an end to these illicit operations, stating, “The grave abuse and great disrespect to our system of laws must stop.”

Impact on Employment and the Economy

The ban on POGOs is expected to have significant implications for the Philippine economy and the thousands of Filipinos employed in the industry.

According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), around 22,000 Filipinos are currently working in some 50 legitimate POGO companies as of June 2024. However, the actual number of Filipinos employed in the industry, including those working in clandestine POGO hubs, could be much higher.

The closure of POGO companies is expected to result in a substantial loss of jobs, posing a major challenge for the government. Labor Secretary Benjamin Laguesma acknowledged that the displacement of these workers would be a serious concern, given the tight job market in the country.

The sudden increase in unemployment could potentially lead to social problems if not addressed promptly.

To mitigate the impact on affected workers, President Marcos has instructed the DOLE, in coordination with the administration’s economic managers, to use the time between now and the end of the year to find new jobs for displaced Filipinos.

The government aims to provide alternative employment opportunities and support for those who will lose their livelihoods due to the POGO ban.

Calls for a Gradual Phaseout and Transitory Mechanisms

In light of the potential economic and social repercussions of an abrupt POGO ban, various stakeholders have called for a more gradual approach.

The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the country’s largest business organization, has suggested a phased closure of POGOs, taking into consideration the expected job losses and the impact on businesses that provide support services to the industry.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, chair of the committee on ways and means, emphasized the need for transitory mechanisms and safety nets for affected workers. He proposed upskilling and reskilling programs to ensure that displaced employees can find replacement jobs as soon as possible.

The DOLE has expressed its readiness to implement the necessary programs to aid POGO workers, including facilitation programs for reskilling and upskilling, as well as livelihood and emergency employment through community-based initiatives.

Addressing the Root Causes and Ensuring Compliance

While the ban on POGOs aims to curb the criminal activities associated with the industry, it is crucial to address the root causes of these issues. The failure of regulatory authorities to effectively monitor and enforce compliance with the terms and conditions of POGO licenses has been a significant factor in the proliferation of illegal activities.

President Marcos emphasized that banning POGOs alone will not solve all the problems the country has been encountering. He called for vigilance, principled action, and a focus on the nation’s well-being from all officials, law enforcers, government workers, and citizens.

The President stressed the importance of fighting wrong and evil, stating, “Lagi po nating ipaglaban ang tama at mabuti. Lagi po nating mahalin ang Pilipinas, lagi po nating mahalin ang Pilipino.” (Let us always fight for what is right and good. Let us always love the Philippines, let us always love Filipinos.)

Moving Forward

As the Philippines moves forward with the ban on POGOs, it is essential for the government to prioritize the welfare of affected workers and implement effective measures to mitigate the economic impact.

Collaboration between the DOLE, economic managers, and business groups will be crucial in finding alternative employment opportunities and supporting the redeployment of displaced employees.

Additionally, strengthening regulatory oversight and enforcement mechanisms will be necessary to prevent the resurgence of illegal activities in the future. The government must ensure that any remaining gaming operations strictly adhere to the law and that the rights and well-being of workers are protected.

The ban on POGOs marks a significant shift in the Philippines’ approach to the gaming industry. While the decision may have short-term challenges, it presents an opportunity for the country to focus on building a more sustainable and socially responsible economy.

By addressing the root causes of the problems associated with POGOs and implementing effective transitory measures, the Philippines can move towards a future that prioritizes the welfare of its citizens and upholds the integrity of its laws and institutions.

A massive global IT outage caused by a faulty software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike left businesses and governments reeling on Friday, July 19, 2024.

The incident, which has been described as the “largest IT outage in history,” disrupted critical services across various industries, including airlines, banks, healthcare, and media.

What Happened?

CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity company, distributed a flawed driver update for its Falcon software on Windows PCs and servers at 04:09 UTC on July 19. The faulty update caused a large number of computers running Microsoft Windows to crash, displaying the infamous “Blue Screen of Death.”

The issue stemmed from a “defect found in a single content update for Microsoft Windows hosts,” according to CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz. He emphasized that it was not a cyberattack or security incident and that a fix had been deployed.

Global Impact

The outage affected businesses and governments worldwide, reflecting the widespread use of Microsoft Windows and CrowdStrike software by large corporations across various sectors.

CrowdStrike has more than 24,000 customers, including nearly 60% of Fortune 500 companies and over half of the Fortune 1,000.Industries hit hard by the outage included:

  • AirlinesAmerican Airlines, Delta, United Airlines, and Spirit Airlines grounded all pending flight departures, causing significant travel disruptions. In Europe, Lufthansa, KLM, and SAS Airlines also reported issues.
  • Banking and Finance: Banks and financial institutions from Australia, India, and South Africa warned clients about disruptions to their services. Stock markets were also affected.
  • Healthcare: Hospitals in Germany canceled elective surgeries, while doctors in the UK faced problems accessing their online booking systems. Pharmacists in the UK reported disruptions in medicine deliveries and accessing prescriptions.
  • Media: Britain’s Sky News and the BBC’s TV network aimed at children went off the air.

The cost of the outage is estimated to be “very significant and likely run into the billions” of British pounds, according to a British professor.

Impact on the Philippines

Philippine companies and services were not spared from the global outage. CrowdStrike’s Falcon Sensor software, which caused Microsoft Windows to crash, affected various industries in the country. Some of the affected sectors in the Philippines included:

  1. Airlines: Flights were delayed or canceled, causing inconvenience to travelers and disrupting airport operations.
  2. Banking: Banks and financial institutions experienced service disruptions, affecting customers’ ability to access their accounts and perform transactions.
  3. Healthcare: Hospitals and clinics relying on Windows-based systems faced difficulties in managing patient records, appointments, and other critical functions.
  4. Business Operations: Companies using CrowdStrike’s software on Windows platforms encountered system crashes, hindering their daily operations and productivity.

The incident highlighted the country’s dependence on foreign technology providers and the need for contingency plans to mitigate the impact of such outages.

Lessons Learned

The CrowdStrike outage has raised important questions about the world’s reliance on a handful of tech giants and the potential risks associated with this concentration of power. As Michael Daniel, former

White House cybersecurity coordinator, pointed out, “It’s going to continue to raise issues for systems or businesses wholly dependent on Microsoft – this issue of concentration risk.”Experts warn that businesses must fight complacency when outsourcing technology to big vendors.

Andrius Minkevicius, co-founder of Cyber Upgrade, emphasized the importance of having contingency plans in place: “Today, we’re seeing an example of those who relied mostly on vendor-offered cyber protection without additional contingency plans and are now suffering reputational and financial damage.”

The incident is likely to invite scrutiny from regulators and officials, with CrowdStrike possibly having to allow outside experts to examine how the outage occurred.

Moving Forward

As the world becomes increasingly digital and reliant on cloud computing, it is crucial for businesses and governments to reassess their technology dependencies and develop robust contingency plans. This includes:

  1. Diversifying technology providers: Relying on multiple vendors can help mitigate the risk of a single point of failure.
  2. Investing in local technology infrastructure: Developing homegrown solutions and expertise can reduce dependence on foreign providers and improve resilience.
  3. Regularly testing and updating contingency plans: Organizations should conduct regular drills and simulations to ensure their backup systems and processes are effective in the event of an outage.
  4. Collaborating with industry partners and regulators: Sharing best practices, threat intelligence, and lessons learned can help strengthen the overall cybersecurity ecosystem.

In the Philippines, the CrowdStrike incident serves as a wake-up call for businesses and the government to prioritize technology resilience and develop a comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy. By investing in local talent, infrastructure, and partnerships, the country can better protect itself against future outages and ensure the continuity of critical services.

As the world grapples with the aftermath of the CrowdStrike outage, it is clear that the incident will have far-reaching implications for how we approach technology dependence and cybersecurity.

By learning from this experience and taking proactive steps to build resilience, we can create a more secure and stable digital future for all.
