The Department of Education (DepEd) is set to implement the National Learning Camp (NLC) 2024 during the End-of-School Year (EOSY) break as part of its ongoing efforts to support learning recovery and address learning gaps caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The NLC is a comprehensive, voluntary summer program aimed at improving student outcomes and strengthening teacher capacity.
Objectives and Implementation
The NLC 2024 has a two-fold purpose:
- Enhance learner performance and bridge learning gaps
- Provide support and training for teachers to deliver quality instruction
The program will run for three weeks from July 1 to 19, 2024. It will have a phased implementation, initially focusing on Grades 1-3 and Grades 7-10. The key subject areas covered are Reading and Mathematics for elementary, and English, Science, and Mathematics for junior high school.
Students will be placed into one of three camps based on their learning needs as determined by pre-assessments:
- Enhancement Camp: For advanced learners, providing enrichment activities and more in-depth exploration of competencies
- Consolidation Camp: Offers additional practice and reinforcement of previously learned skills
- Intervention Camp: Supports struggling learners who need foundational literacy and numeracy support
Camp-like Learning Environment
The NLC aims to foster a fun and engaging camp-like atmosphere to make learning enjoyable for students. Schools are encouraged to set up tents and utilize outdoor spaces for interactive activities alongside classroom instruction. The program will integrate socio-emotional learning, character development, and personal growth.
Teachers will employ non-traditional methods like educational games to help struggling learners grasp competencies in a more interesting way. Collaborative and hands-on learning experiences will be designed to motivate student participation.
Teacher Support and Training
Recognizing the vital role of teachers, the NLC will dedicate two days per week for Learning Action Cell (LAC) sessions where teachers can share expertise and enhance their professional practice collaboratively.
Teachers will undergo capability-building to strengthen their skills in differentiated instruction, learning assessment, and remediation. They will be equipped with teaching resources and modules to effectively facilitate the camps.
Educator participation in the NLC is voluntary. DepEd will provide incentives such as service credits, certificates of recognition, and other benefits to encourage teachers to dedicate their time during the summer break.
Monitoring and Evaluation
The NLC will utilize pre- and post-assessments to determine student placement and measure learning gains. Careful monitoring and evaluation will be conducted to assess the program’s effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
DepEd will work closely with schools division offices to ensure proper implementation, provision of learning materials, and technical support. Orientation activities will be held to familiarize stakeholders with the NLC guidelines.
